Abstract: LAM was created in 2011 through the fusion of the Centre d'Etude d'Afrique Noire (CEAN, Bordeaux) and the Centre d'études et de recherches sur les pays d'Afrique orientale (CREPAO, Université de Pau et des Pays de l'Adour, UPPA). As the new name indicates, limitation to "black" Africa was given up for a brooader perspective, including north Africa and African diaspora. Founded in 1958, the CEAN was one of the main francophone institutions in the field of the research in politics in Africa. It consisted of researchers from the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and the Institut d'Etudes Politiques (IEP) de Bordeaux. It was also affiliated to the Fondation Nationale des Sciences Politiques (FNSP). The CEAN was not only doing research but it was also teaching and documenting. Its interdisciplinary group of researchers consisted of political scientists, sociologists, economists, jurists, historians, anthropologists and geographers, who analysed current political phenomena in Africa.
